Overworking the Heart

Americans live in the fast lane—working longer hours, taking less vacation days, and retiring later than most other countries. But is this the path to success or the road to ruin?

Many of us experience job burnout – physical and emotional exhaustion that results from too much stress from too much work. And burnout is also associated with obesity, insomnia, and anxiety.

Now researchers have found that those who are in the top twenty percent of a burnout scale have an increased risk of heart disease—by nearly eighty percent!

You can put your heart into your work, but don’t overwork your heart—give yourself some time off. After all, a day of rest a week is even a commandment. Consider stepping out of the fast lane for the sake of your health AND your family.
