Everyone wants a good dental checkup, but many of us have a menagerie of fillings, crowns, and other dental work. Those fillings may beef up your bite, but are they hurting your health?
A substance called amalgam is commonly used in dental fillings, but includes mercury as an ingredient. Is that safe?
The debate has been longstanding, with some believing mercury in dental amalgam can cause a wide range of health problems—from multiple sclerosis and cancer to Alzheimer’s disease.
However, you can replace that fear with the facts:
Studies from multiple organizations including the CDC and U.S. Department of Health have all concluded amalgam is safe and effective. The mercury is bonded to other chemicals in the amalgam. Because it can’t leach into your system, it isn’t a threat.
Now that’s news to make you smile.
